Spades

When I close my eyes it’s May

I see its clear and changed

The buzz of a stihl chainsaw

In the woods where we would play

I learned to be afraid

In a warm and loving home

With brown log walls that warped

To hug the life we made

My daddy taught me spades

And momma how to play

I wouldn’t go to bed

Afraid they’d wind up dead

There’s nothing I would change

I learned to be afraid

I learned to be a heart

Fragile from the start

When I close my ears it’s true

I hear it just the same

The trembling in my veins

My power comes from you
